dknyprgirl: Is Asking About Growth Opportunity On An Interview A Deal Breaker?

· 15/12/11 · 65 · Reblog

dknyprgirl:

To make a long-ish story short, we are hiring a new PR Coordinator. While interviewing CandidateX (who has been out of college a year), I asked the typical “do you have any questions?” question. She replied, “Yes. Is there room for growth?”.

Umm ok there are two schools of thought here. My…

As a PR student/interviewee it’s great to read about the interviewers point of view….

  1. tracybrisson answered: Better question- “What was the career progression of the people who had this job before me?”
  2. wishmenew answered: I feel like it shows the CandidateX want to grow and will work hard to get there. If you know that there is room to grow, I would work harder
  3. imsonotaprncsx answered: mmhh :D

have to say I disagree with dknyprgirl in this case and agree with...gone on many job...
  6. mydads2ndgirl answered: I’m on Philippines now..Well,I am an interviewer.:)
  7. therollingportobello answered: Long haul. Being young & w/ a bad economy, jobs are impossible to find at time. this would be my primary worry. It’s often a Q I wonder, too-
  8. callousandcruel answered: I think its a completely reasonable question. Who wants to get stuck in a job with no growth and miss out on better opportunities?

  10. pencilskirtandpumps answered: Hi prgirl, I’m an interviewee and think it’s a legit question if ur just starting out in ur career and want upward mobility in ur job.
  11. obsessionsofagirl answered: As an interviewee I would avoid the question. Demonstrate my longterm interest in a different way and avoid possibly offending my interviewer
  12. anirtak14 answered: this one is so cute i want it
  13. crmprgirl answered: As the interviewee, I have asked that and in my mind it is because I’d prefer to move up in a company than jump around to different companies
  14. afteryourheartdesign answered: As an interviewee, I would want to know if there were opportunities to move up. If there was no chance I would go to another company.
  15. cityofsham answered: I’m probably in and around this interviewee’s age. To me, it shows the company can invest in me, and I in the company. Grow together.
  16. scottgaulin answered: If this was the only or first question she posed I would move on to another candidate. If it was part of a larger exchange I would allow it
  17. andrewophillips answered: i think if a candidate is interviewing for an internship that is a valid question to ask. But, for Coordinator position, get the job 1st
  18. jessnonsense answered: I’m an interviewee and I
  19. whoistracytoxic answered: i think its a very important question to ask. most people who have interviewed actually answer the question without being asked.
  20. c-oveted answered: I will just be starting my very first PR work term. In school they recommend us to ask questions and the growth one is one of them.
  21. slycookies answered: Business schools teach you to ask it to show you’re motivated and are looking for a career, not just a job.
  22. lovepuppy answered: I’d rather hire someone w/ an enthusiastic personality than someone who “says the right things” in an interview. New grads sound like robots.

  24. arcadianeight answered: As a 21yo, I would translate that as “If I get this job, will I still have it in a year?” We’re just afraid of redundancy
  25. fatgirlinohio answered: I was screwed over by my last employer (four years) so for me to enter into a new job I wanted to know upfront about growth potential.
  26. andreafashionissue answered: I always ask if the company generally promotes from within. I feel like it’s more about showing drive and desire than assuming I have the job
  27. wmw-wifemomwoman answered: I sat on both camps. I believe that is a great question. She’s looking ahead not just the now In todays times is economy its essential.

  29. popularglasses answered: When I’ve interviewed people in the past, I’d mention the typical progression for the position. As interviewee I’ve never asked; seems pushy.

  31. blogthenewblack answered: To me, a career is like a marraige, and I want to know the otherside is ready to commit with me! So I like the question. Loyalty is important
  32. runeattravel reblogged this from dknyprgirl and added:
    inerviewer asks you: “Where do
  33. sassycathyann answered: as an interviewee I think it’s a no, no question. I would like to stay somewhere for a while, contribute, learn & make a difference
  34. runeattravel answered: I am the interviewee. And I don’t ever begin about growth, but my interviewer asked: “where do you see yourself in 5 years?” And then what?
